Interview with South African poet Lebo Mashile

  Lebo Mashile is one of the most interesting women and one of the most representative artists of oral poetry in South Africa.
Lebo Mashile, Lebogang Mashile is a poet, performer, presenter and actress. Daughter of South African exiles, was born in 1979 in the United States. She returned with her parents to South Africain 1995. While studying law and international relations at Wits University in Johannesburg, she became interested in the arts. Poetry is her preferred medium of expression. Her poetry focuses on the socio-political issues in South Africa as well as issues of sexuality, the status of women and diversity. Her first publication "A Ribbon of Rhythm" in 2005 won the Noma Award for the best publication of poetry in Africa, and in 2007 won the Mashile Lebo City Press / Rapport Woman.
She published her second book of poetry "Flying Above the Sky" in 2008.
